Our History
Zawiyya Shettimari was founded by the great Islamic scholar, Malam Shettima Mammadu, at Tsohon Nguru Ward, Nguru Local Government Area, Yobe State. The Zawiyya continues to promote Islamic knowledge throughout the community through the memorization of the Holy Qur'an, studies of Hadith, Sira (the history of the Holy Prophet), Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), Arabic, and other Islamic sciences.
These studies were conducted under the leadership of Malam Muhammad Shettima (known as “Gafatta”), the eldest son of Malam Shettima Mammadu, who was one of the students of Sheikh Muhammad Ngibrima Nguru. He established the renowned Islamic school NUJUMUL AULAD in 1964, which has graduated thousands of students and continues to operate successfully to this day.
After the passing of the great Imam, the Zawiyya came under the leadership of the erudite Islamic scholar,Sheikh Lawan Abba Shettima — a revivalist of the Tariqatul Tijjaniyya and expert in Islamic jurisprudence, who continues the teaching mission with distinction.
